Provide Advanced First Aid

HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid – equips individuals with the comprehensive skills and knowledge required to provide an advanced level of first aid response in a wide range of emergencies. This unit is ideal for individuals working in high-risk environments such as construction, mining, sports, healthcare, and community services, where enhanced first aid capabilities are necessary.

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to assess complex emergency situations and provide advanced life support, including managing airway obstructions, severe trauma, and medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, and anaphylaxis. The training covers advanced first aid techniques, including administering oxygen, using an automated external defibrillator (AED), and conducting basic first aid for fractures, burns, and spinal injuries. Participants will also gain experience in coordinating with emergency services, managing multiple casualties, and applying advanced care until professional medical assistance arrives.

Upon completing HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid, participants will be equipped to manage serious and complex emergencies, providing advanced care to stabilise individuals and ensure their safety. This training is essential for those who need to deliver a higher level of first aid in critical situations, ensuring the best possible outcomes in emergency scenarios.

  • This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

  • Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

    Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 16 Hours
    Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 6 Hours

  • Participants must have the physical capacity to perform all practical demonstrations including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins.

    Online study options: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

  • Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

    Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
    Complete a first aid incident report form based on the adult CPR simulated first aid scenario
    Perform CPR on an infant
    Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
    Manage a casualty with asthma
    Manage a choking casualty
    Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
    Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
    Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
    Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
    Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
    Simulated First Aid Scenario - Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed
    Complete a first aid incident report form based on the life-threatening bleed first aid scenario
    Coordinate a multiple casualty incident
    Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
