PUAEME007 – Provide Emergency Care for Suspected Spinal Injury – equips individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage and provide emergency care for a person with a suspected spinal injury. This unit is crucial for emergency responders, first aiders, and personnel in roles such as lifeguards, sports trainers, and workplace first aid officers, where handling traumatic injuries is essential.
Throughout the course, participants will learn how to assess a person for spinal injury, stabilise the spine to prevent further damage, and provide critical care until medical professionals arrive. The training covers safe handling techniques, the use of spinal immobilisation devices, and how to maintain an open airway without causing additional injury. Participants will also learn how to manage patient communication, ensure safety during transport, and follow protocols for emergency spinal care.
This unit is ideal for emergency responders, healthcare providers, and individuals working in environments where spinal injuries are a risk, such as sports fields, construction sites, or water-based activities.
Upon completing PUAEME007 – Provide Emergency Care for Suspected Spinal Injury, participants will be able to confidently assess and manage spinal injuries, ensuring the safety and stabilisation of the injured person until professional medical help is available. This training is essential for preventing further injury and promoting the best possible outcomes in emergencies involving the spine.
This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Face-to-Face - Face to Face contact time of at least 5 Hours
Online with face-to-face assessment - Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours
The full in-person delivery option (replacing the online blended component) requires a minimum of five participants per session.An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
Hold the pre-requisite unit HLTAD011 Provide First Aid
Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills which includes conducting spinal manual in-line stabilisation (MILS) techniques, kneeling on the floor to perform a log roll as part of a team , assisting a conscious casualty to supine position and using equipment to immobilise a casualty’s spine to transport them away from a hazard
Online study options: The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
Practical scenarios:
Assist a conscious casualty with suspected spinal injury into supine position
Manage an unconscious breathing casualty with suspected spinal injury
Manage an unconscious non-breathing casualty with suspected spinal injury
Documentation:
Complete an Incident Report
Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.
