RPE

Respirator Protective Equipment Fit Test

RPE fit testing is required for employees wearing tight-fighting disposable or reusable respirators. This procedure helps ensure the user has selected the correct size respirator and that a seal against the face can be made to provide the expected protection.

RPE fit testing is required for employees wearing tight-fighting disposable or reusable respirators. This procedure helps ensure the user has selected the correct size respirator and that a seal against the face can be made to provide the expected protection.

The RPE fit test is valid only for the make, model and size of mask being tested.

It should be assessed:
at least annually to comply with AS/NZS 1715.
whenever a different size, model or make of respirator is used.
when any facial changes occur that could affect fit, such as significant weight fluctuation or dental work.

We offer quantitative (highest standard) RPE fit testing for disposable masks, half-face and full-face respirators to meet the requirements of Telfer/Greatland Mine, Sino Iron and many other workplaces.

Please note that to achieve an adequate seal, subjects must have no facial hair where the mask seal touches the face, with some sites requiring personnel to be clean shaven. Refer to our facial hair guide.

Please email us at testing@primetraining.com.au if you require any guidance.

  • This course can be delivered/assessed in the facility organised by the training provider.

  • Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Typically a 1-2 day, blended program with online pre-learning and face-to-face practical assessments for full accreditation.

For individuals simply needing to get tested (not train as a tester), the procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

  • Clean-Shaven: Attendees must be clean-shaven in the area where the respirator seals to the face (no stubble, beards, or moustaches). Stubble can reduce protection by up to 33%.
No Food/Drink/Smoking: Participants should not eat, drink (except plain water), smoke, or chew gum for at least 30 to 60 minutes prior to the test.
Medical Fitness: Attendees should be medically fit to wear a respirator.
Equipment: It is highly recommended to bring the specific make, model, and size of the respirator mask used in your workplace.

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

  • Combine theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on demonstrations to ensure compliance with occupational safety regulations.

  • Respirator or mask fit test certificates generally require renewal at least annually to ensure compliance with the AS/NZS 1715:2009 standards. This annual renewal applies to both disposable P2/N95 masks and reusable tight-fitting respirators.
