Some of you might have spotted our Operations Manager Robbie on the BHP ad on TV lately, or even on the side of a bus around Port Hedland! Aside from giving his mates another reason to pay him out, there's a story behind it 😁

Back in 2020, Robbie wrote a business case on behalf of the North West Spearfishing Club proposing an artificial reef for recreational fishing off the coast of Port Hedland, which was then presented to a group of stakeholders. The goal was to transform a barren sandy patch of our seabed (which is widespread in Hedland waters!) into a sustainable ecosystem teeming with marine life. It was also a great way of offsetting some of the environmental impact of our mining and marine operations.

While spearfishing up here, he’d seen firsthand how much sea life there is living on and around basic artificial underwater structures such as our shipping channel markers, so he knew that this would be a huge success if it could get off the ground.

The proposal gained support from Recfishwest, followed by funding from BHP for the design and environmental approvals, and later for construction and deployment.

So when Recfishwest and BHP asked Robbie if he’d like to volunteer to be involved in the ad campaign, he was happy to step up!

It's very exciting that after all this time, construction of the concrete reef modules is due to commence within the next couple of months. It's set to be the largest artificial reef in Australia and will be a huge asset to our town for generations!

Can you keep your beard when you undergo a mask fit test? 🧔🏻‍♂️ This is one of the first questions that comes up when booking in!

To make life easier, here is a handy chart to let you know what works and what doesn’t 👍

In most cases, faces should be completely clean shaven as stubble can affect the seal and leave the mask ineffective. However, some moustache styles are fine as the mask will still sit against clean shaven skin 👨🏻

Important to note that some mine sites require you to be clean shaven as mandatory - please check before booking your fit test.
